HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Women ought to be always celebrated not relegated.
International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

International Women's Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action - whatever that looks like globally and also at a local level. But one thing is for sure, International Women's Day has been occurring for well over a century - and continue's to grow from strength to strength.

As women all over the world celebrate International Women's Day today, I'ld like us to bring to mind the problems women face around the world. Narrowing it down to Africa and Nigeria in particular, these are the two major problems women face:

  • Access to education (or rather lack of access to education) and;
  • Child marriage
The gender gap in education in developing nations is extremely problematic. Without education, women are powerless, and in many places, governments are fully aware that education is power, and this is why they suppress women's right to education. Lack of education is robbing women worldwide of their full potential. Education can help millions of women all around the world realise their potential and empower them to change the world for the better. It can boost their confidence in their own bodies, health and minds, helping them to feel more empowered to stand up for themselves.

Child brides face huge challenges as a result of being married as children. Isolated, often with their freedom curtailed, girls frequently feel dis-empowered and are deprived of their fundamental rights to health, education and safety.

As this year's International Women's Day theme is #BeBoldForChange let women around the world be bold to challenge stereotypes, point out bias and highlight alternatives and also be bold to redefine the status quo. Let us campaign against violence, physical and otherwise; let us recognize coercive control and redress it; let us #BeBoldForChange.
Happy International Women's Day!
